La Coupe de cheveux
First haircut for a 3 years old boy
Man is compared to a tree. The first 3 years of freedom and unkemptness relate to the initial growth and the spur of energy that is witnessed at the beginning of all creatures and events. After an initial period of 3 years, the time has come to guide and shape the wild hair into a more subdued and thoughtful vision and action.
Traditionally the Jewish 3 years old boys are brought to have an initiation to respect the law and submission to moral dictates. This is represented by the first haircut.
the ceremony usually includes the introduction to the Hebrew alphabet and the donning of a pair of Tsitsit.
In this Judaica Portrait of a 3 year old boy the day of his first haircut, I wanted to show the love and enthusiasm for the newness of the Mitzvah of Tsistit. The purity and the love are also represented in the whiteness of his clothing.
18x24” Oil pastel on watercolor paper.
